What are the skills I need to become a Leader of Change?

What are the kinds of skills a Leader of Change needs to do well in this world? If you are thinking about improving your skills around leadership, change or strategy why not consider how colleagues might rate you on the following attributes:

Noticing and attending to what is happening around you – being mindful and aware of what you see and what is happening (without unnecessary speculation about why).

Responding with empathy (not sympathy) to people’s concerns and needs – recognising what is needed by others in the present situation.

Communicating (often within difficult constraints) in a way that builds trust -this might mean letting people know you can’t say what you know and why (e.g. market rules often preclude staff announcements) but not hiding behind such constraints as ‘devices’: aiming for openness and transparency.

Taking a lead by modelling what a situation demands -this might mean providing a positive steer by

  • offering a way forward when people are very uncertain
  • creating a plan of action that suggests a more predictable future
  • providing some time and space for people to discuss what is happening and look for their own way forward
  • or just following and supporting someone else’s lead.

We are not saying that these skills are all that matters; merely that they need more attention when life is changing. And in today’s uncertain world, life is sure to change. It is a leader’s role to engage people to be ready, responsive and adaptable so that change becomes just “something else we do” and even at times, enjoy.
