Kate Winslet offered the chance to train with the London Fire Brigade
24th of August 2011
Following her bravery at the fire which rampaged through Sir Richard Branson’s luxury Caribbean home on Necker Island, Kate Winslet has been offered the opportunity to train with firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Winslet was staying with around 20 other guests at the Great House, when the fire broke out after the property was hit by lightning during a tropical storm on the island. Sir Richard has publicly thanked her for helping to carry his 90-year-old mother out of the main house to safety, and her actions have resulted in the LFB inviting her to visit its training centre to learn how the crews deal with fires.
If Winslet accepts the invitation she will be shown the best ways to prevent fires from happening and how being prepared for a fire means a much better chance of survival. Her visit to the Brigade’s training centre will also see Kate experience the role of a modern day firefighter as she meets trainees and gets the chance to try out various operational duties, such as climbing a ladder pitched against a tower block and using firefighter breathing apparatus.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the LFB, Dany Cotton (who is also the highest operational woman firefighter in the UK) says she hopes Kate Winslet’s actions will “encourage more women to think about becoming a firefighter” and that the actress has demonstrated that “women can carry out rescues just as well as men.”
